Aurorasound HEADA Headphone Amplifier
The HEADA Headphone Amplifier is Aurorasound’s latest development, created by Shuichi Karaki and built to the same standard as the VIDA phono stage and PREDA preamplifier. Designed around a fully balanced-drive architecture, it delivers high performance headphone amplification with exceptional control, clarity, and detail.
Key features:
• fully balanced-drive headphone amplifier
• discrete transistor and FET amplifier modules (4 units)
• high power toroidal transformer
• high-speed regulated power supply
• 4-pin XLR output
• 2x 3-pin XLR outputs
• standard headphone jack (single-ended)
• low/high gain switch for different headphone loads
• dual input selector (XLR + RCA / RCA only)
• pass-through output for system integration
• large conductive plastic volume control (low tracking error)
• real wood case with aluminium controls and metal isolation feet
Design and performance:
The balanced-drive amplifier design significantly improves performance by increasing slew rate and voltage swing while reducing distortion and crosstalk. By eliminating the shared ground plane, each channel operates independently, resulting in a cleaner, more precise signal.
This architecture allows the HEADA to deliver excellent control over demanding high-end headphone drivers, maintaining accuracy across the frequency range while preserving musical detail.
The four-wire balanced connection further enhances stereo imaging, providing a wider and more stable soundstage with improved separation and presence.
Materials and construction:
• discrete transistor and FET amplification stages
• precision volume control with low channel imbalance
• toroidal transformer for stable power delivery
• high-speed regulated power supply
• high-quality XLR and RCA connectivity
• solid aluminium control knob
• wooden chassis with metal isolation feet
The amplifier modules are carefully designed to balance performance and reliability, using proven components and short signal paths to maintain signal integrity.
Sound characteristics:
• wide, open soundstage
• highly detailed and transparent presentation
• tight, controlled low frequencies
• clear and well-defined midrange
• low distortion and minimal crosstalk
The balanced-drive system brings a more speaker-like presentation to headphone listening, with greater scale and realism compared to conventional single-ended designs.
Build and usability:
The HEADA combines high-end performance with practical flexibility. Multiple output options support a wide range of headphone connectors, while the gain switch allows compatibility with both sensitive and demanding headphones.
The pass-through output enables easy integration into a wider system without signal loss, and the dual input selection allows connection of multiple sources.
The design is finished in a vintage-inspired wooden chassis, maintaining Aurorasound’s distinctive aesthetic while offering a robust and well-built enclosure.
Note:
For full performance, balanced headphones and appropriate cabling are recommended to take full advantage of the amplifier’s balanced-drive architecture.
